About the position
Department of Computer Science (IDI) in Gjøvik invites applications for 3-year full time PhD/Early Stage Researcher position in Computer Science. The position will be based at the Norwegian Colour and Visual Computing Laboratory.
The recruited researchers will work in a high-level international research environment within the Colourlab, at the premises of NTNU in Gjøvik, and in close collaboration with other researchers from the ApPEARS network.
During the 36-month contract, each PhD candidate will spend maximum of 9 months in second-ments/internships to the other project partners.
The candidates should participate in a rich program of organized research training activities, enabling them for a future career as scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs and innovators who can assume scientific and technological leadership in the field of visual computing, imaging techniques colour science and appearance printing.
The main objective is to train next generation researchers within the field of appearance printing using 3D and 2.5D printing techniques as well as extending further the understanding of the appearance of prints from two to three dimensions.
The position reports to department leader.
The recruited candidates will work on distinct but related fields of research within the ApPEARS project.
The candidate is expected to work towards image appearance reproduction workflow using 2.5D printing techniques. During the research, the candidate will investigate and develop 2.5D printing techniques for (1) identifying the requirements for a 2.5D colour reproduction system based on advanced colour management technology, and implement a framework, (2) developing and evaluate advanced methods for predicting the appearance of 2.5D output media which integrate into projected colour management workflows, (3) developing and implement forward and inverse channel mixing models using next-generation colour management technologies, and (4) determining optimum methods of data exchange and processing for spatially varying and non-planar media. The candidate will collaborate with the ApPEARS partners and other ESRs to validate and understand the results.

The Ph.D./Early Stage Researcher (ESR) position is funded by the EU Research and Innovation programme Horizon 2020, under Grant 814158 by Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Innovative Training Networks (MSCA-ITN)
The period of employment for the position is 3 years. All successful candidates must be able to secure a residence and work permit in Norway.
The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is completion of a Master's degree in a relevant engineering or science subject such as (but not limited to) Colour Science, Colour Technology, Image Science, Image Processing and Computer Vision.or a related discipline, with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be considered only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree. Applicants must be qualified for admission as PhD students at NTNU.
The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant. - Good knowledge of the field of colour science and technology, colour measurement, colour device characterization.
- Good knowledge of psychophysical experiment.
- Proficiency in Matlab, Python or a similar programming environment.

Candidates who have completed their Master degree in an institution where English is not the language of instruction must present one of the following Secure English Language Test (SELT) results as follows:
- TOEFL Internet-Based (iBT) – minimum 95 with a writing score of at least 24
- Academic IELTS – minimum 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each element
- Advanced Cambridge Certificate at grade C or better.
- The test results must not be older than 24 months on the date of the application deadline
- Quality of the candidate assessed through the candidate’s academic merit and relevant professional experience.
- The candidate should also possess a sound working knowledge of quantitative & qualitative research methods, experimental design and statistical methods.
Eligibility requirements that apply to all Marie Skłodowska-Curie Researchers
- The candidate must not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Norway for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to his/her recruitment under the project (short stays such as holidays are not counted).
- At the time of recruitment, the candidate must not have been awarded a doctorate degree and must be in the first 4 years of her/his research career.
- The candidate must work exclusively for the project during the employment contract.
- Researchers can be of any nationality. They are required to undertake transnational mobility (i.e. move from one country to another) when taking up their appointment.

Salary and conditions
PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross NOK 449 400 per annum before tax. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
In addition, there will be a mobility allowance gross EUR 7200 and family allowance gross EUR 6000 per annum before tax. Eligibility for receiving family allowance depends on the family status when the contract starts. Employer’s tax of 14,1% is deducted from the mobility and family allowances before paid to the candidate. National taxation rules for salaries apply as well.
The period of employment is 3 years. Appointment to a PhD position requires admission to the PhD programme in Computer Science. As a PhD candidate, you undertake to participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period. A condition of appointment is that you are in fact qualified for admission to the PhD programme within three months.
Appointment takes place on the terms that apply to State employees at any time, and after the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
